SAVE THE DATE: Giving Day 2021 will be April 21-22, 2021
American Society of Civil Engineers

Introduction:

Of the many events that our student chapter attends, the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) is the most anticipated. This annual conference brings in ASCE student chapters throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii to compete in both technical and non-technical events. This year, Cal Poly Pomona placed third out of eighteen universities. We’ve remained a leader at this conference, always within the top five overall scores. Our student-led project teams are working hard to continue our legacy.

About Concrete Canoe

Concrete Canoe is a year-round, student-organized project at Cal Poly Pomona and consists of multiple teams with their respective captain(s) working towards the completion of our project. The Concrete Canoe competition is broken into four judged portions: Final Product, Technical Paper, Oral Presentation, and Paddling. Our goal from year to year is to further improve as a team and expand our knowledge in the designing and construction of our canoes.

How Your Donation Helps

Since we are a non-profit, student-run organization, 100% of our budget comes from gifts and donations. We are looking for donations that will allow us to purchase construction materials, quality mix materials, tools, safety supplies, transportation fees, and more. We hope that you will consider donating for our canoe project as we make the push to go to nationals in 2021.

About GeoWall

GeoWall is a civil engineering student competition team whose objective is to design and build a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall model using paper reinforcements taped to a poster board wall facing. The design objective is to use the least amount of reinforcement needed to support the retained soil plus both vertical and horizontal surcharge loads. Our team members have the opportunity to learn about the design of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls from theoretical design to practical application.

How Your Donation Helps

Sponsorship donations to GeoWall will allow for stronger research ability. They will go towards the completion of our mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall and will allow us to continue competing at both the regional and national levels. As we prepare for the upcoming academic year and competition season, we would like to invite you and your organization to join our team and help us grow as student engineers.

About Steel Bridge

Steel Bridge challenges students to participate in a competition to design and fabricate a 1/10 scale steel bridge to sustain specific loading conditions while conforming to several other strict requirements. In order to be competitive, a team must perform well in categories such as construction time, overall deflection, weight, and aesthetics.

How Your Donation Helps

Our success relies heavily on fundraising and support to give us the resources we need to be successful, competitive, and working at our best potential. Our team benefits greatly from your donations and contributions.

About Donald G. Wells

Civil engineering professor emeritus Donald G. Wells passed away on May 1 following an extended illness. Affectionately known as “Water Wells”, he was a leader in the environmental and water resources group within the Civil Engineering Department and was especially instrumental in enhancing the department’s laboratory facilities.  A graduate of Stanford University, he joined the faculty in 1970 and retired in 2003.

Wells was actively engaged in student extracurricular activities, both formal and informal. He served for many years as the faculty advisor for the Cal Poly Pomona chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and loved playing volleyball and other impromptu sports with his students. He set a very high standard for faculty-student rapport and mentorship, a legacy that continues to this day. His retirement party in 2003 will long be remembered for its outpouring of affection from his former students, many of whom have gone on to very prestigious positions in industry and government.

He was also very active in professional affairs, including service on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Section of ASCE, and was a recipient of the James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award.

About the Donald G. Wells Memorial Endowed Scholarship

In memory of his legacy, the College of Engineering has created the Donald G. Wells Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Donald touched so many lives in a positive and supportive way. Contributing to this scholarship will help continue that tradition.
