Philosophy

The Philosophy Department is raising funds for their Department Excellence Fund which would support for the following activities:

Ethics Bowl:  Ethics Bowl is a team-based oral presentation competition where students respond to questions about contemporary ethical controversies and defend their answers before their opponents and expert judges. Ethics Bowl is a valuable activity for any student interested in ethics, as well for students interested in careers in policy, government, or law. Cal Poly Pomona has competed in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl for a decade with great success, including California regional championships and appearances in the national Ethics Bowl semifinals and quarterfinals.  Donations will help pay for student travel to regional and national competitions.

World Philosophy Day:  Each year, on the third Thursday of November, the Philosophy Department organizes a World Philosophy Day celebration involving CPP student, alumni, and faculty presentations and panels, a student-alumni mixer, and presentations about the value and career readiness of a degree in philosophy.  For students, this day represents a rare opportunity to be in community with so many others who are interested in and value philosophy while also being able to share that community with friends and family members outside philosophy.  World Philosophy Day builds community and belonging among our students, and students regularly comment on how valuable the celebration was, especially for getting to know each other.  The event typically garners over 200 attendees throughout the day, and the success of this co-curricular event is partly evidenced by the high proportion of student attendees that stay for nearly all of the day’s events (5 to 6 hours).  Donations will help pay for day-long event.

Undergraduate Journal of Ethics, Policy, and Social Justice:  Last year, students began publishing an undergraduate journal, the Undergraduate Journal of Ethics, Policy, and Social Justice (UJEPS).  In a newly designed course (offered as PHL 4990 in Spring 2022 and 2023), the editorial board works collaboratively (with the aid of the instructor of the course) to train editorial skills, seek submissions, review articles, and determine which articles should be published.  Ultimately, students publish the journal in a public, open-source online format.  Donations will help pay for operating expenses for the journal.
