This scholarship will support graduate-level students who are studying some aspect of animal or human biology, physiology, ecology, or evolution. Preference is given to students who believe mentorship was important in their decision to pursue education at the doctorial level.
After earning his B.S. from UC Riverside, PhD from The University of Michigan, and his DVM from UC Davis, Dr. Steve Wickler became a member of the university community in 1986. In addition to teaching courses for the College of Agriculture, Dr. Wickler served as the University Veterinarian, Director of the Equine Research Center and the director of Laboratory Animal Facilities. He had received a significant number of awards and honorariums, including the 1991-92 Outstanding Advisor and the 1999-2000 Teacher in the College of Agriculture. He was also the 2000 recipient of the California State University's Wang Family Award in Teaching Excellence as well as the USDA Western Region Award for Excellence in Higher Education Programs. He had authored 58 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 32 symposia articles.
During his tenure, Dr. Wickler generated $3.5 million in external funding to support research for graduate and undergraduate students. His passion for teaching is reflected by the stewardship of nearly 70 graduate students working on their master's degree in science as well as mentorship to a large number students working toward their doctorate in veterinary medicine or PhD in science fields.
