Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF)

Help the CBA Build a real-world investment Fund

Imagine our Finance students pitching an investment idea to real partners and a real board before they hit the job market. The Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF), offered to students at Cal Poly Pomona, is a truly unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in securities analysis and portfolio management.

Each year, approximately 20 honors-level students in the SMIF course manage an equity portfolio valued that includes holdings in Fortune 500 companies. In the program, student analysts pitch a investment ideas, which is then submitted to an advisory board for final approval. Taking advantage of the College Of Business Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab, participants keep tabs on the fast-paced financial industry and gain practical knowledge that pays dividends in the competitive job market.

***Winner of the Orange County CFA Portfolio Competition for the last 3 Years!***

The SMIF course mimics the structure of a real asset management team, similar to those at Fidelity or Vanguard. Over 150 Cal Poly Pomona students develop and apply their portfolio management, valuation and financial statement analysis skills – through coursework any by participating in the Student Managed Investment Club.

Furthermore, the SMIF provides a number of benefits to our students and the university, such as:

  • An educational opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience in managing investment funds and bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical experience;
  • Prepares students for the future of work and increase their marketability in careers such as investment advisory, equity research, investment banking, commercial banking, corporate finance;
  • Showcases the Cal Poly Pomona education excellence through regional and national SMIF competitions;
  • Strengthens Cal Poly Pomona’s relationship with the financial industry and distinguished alumni through SMIF events.
