Established in 1925 by W.K. Kellogg, the Arabian Horse Ranch has been a cherished part of Cal Poly Pomona’s story for 100 years. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kellogg purchased eleven Arabian horses in March 1925. Realizing he needed a place to keep them, he began making plans to build a ranch in California which would also serve as his winter home. In May 1925, W.K. Kellogg purchased 377 acres in Pomona for $250,000. Mr. Kellogg hired famed LA architect Myron Hunt to design stables, a mansion, and other buildings on the Ranch. Based on this success, he continued to expand and ultimately donated 813 acres to the State of California in 1932. He also stipulated the breeding program and Sunday Shows continue. Today, the W. K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center at Cal Poly Pomona continues to highlight approximately 70 purebred Arabian horses that support hands-on teaching, research, and breeding. We are the oldest continuous Arabian breeder in the United States, with 40 acres of pasture, three barns, foaling stalls, a breeding and veterinary lab, arenas, and a farrier shop.
One hundred years later, it is still a place for countless generations to experience a Sunday Show and see the beauty of an Arabian horse. As we welcome over 10,000 visitors annually, the heart of the Center remains the students of Cal Poly Pomona. We employ approximately 15 students, with 5 students living full-time at the stables. Over 100 students are actively involved through the Horsemanship Club. We also help veterans as they transition from military to civilian life through our “Horses for Heroes” program. Future Cal Poly Pomona students are regular attendees at the Sunday Shows. The W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center is truly the lifeblood of Cal Poly Pomona and our commitment to “become by doing.” In honor of the 100th anniversary of our beloved W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horses, we hope you will consider a gift to the program — $19.25, $100, $250, or more! — to celebrate the past and prepare for the future. Every gift not only assists with the well-being of the horses and impacts current and future students in learning valuable leadership and career-readiness skills. Thank you for considering supporting the legacy of W.K. Kellogg and sending our Arabian horses a well-deserved “Happy Birthday” wish!
