BASES

A Community of Support

The Black Achievement Success and Engagement in Science (BASES) Scholars program builds a community of support for Black/African American student scholars by providing financial, academic, and mentoring resources throughout the students' first year.

BASES Scholars promotes Black Excellence through curriculum that is responsive to the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas taught by faculty of color within a cohort model. The partnership between the classroom experience and Black Resource Center (BRC) fosters a community who shares an interest in the historical, intellectual, and political traditions of Black Americans, and engages with the Black community at Cal Poly Pomona.

BASES is rooted in Cal Poly Pomona’s mission of be an inclusive polytechnic university and is open to all majors. We encourage highly motivated first year incoming Black/African American students to apply!

Students interact at an in-person BASES event

For Fall semester, students admitted into the BASES Scholar program had the opportunity to enroll in a science course meant to enrich the learning experience and provide more time with the faculty member.

In Spring semester, all BASES Scholars had the opportunity to enroll in the same First Year Experience course that will provide opportunities to learn about campus resources, engage in career exploration, and develop community on campus. Students will also have the option to enroll in a math course taught by faculty within the BASES Scholars network.

Throughout the year, BASES scholars will have academic, social, and mentoring events provided by the BRC that aim to support your individual and community success.

Program Benefits

  • Mentorship and academic skill development from faculty and staff of color
  • Peer mentorship from Cal Poly Pomona students of color and community support from the BRC
  • $750 BASES Scholar Scholarship
